It’s not easy navigating a course in today’s complicated world. And it can seem overwhelming to someone who is troubled by emotional concerns. Therapy for psychological and emotional problems can be expensive and finding the right services often confusing.
Metropolitan Counseling Services can help. We are dedicated to helping adults create positive change in their lives through affordable psychotherapy and counseling. This process fosters balance, self respect, and healthy relationships.
All of our services are provided on a low-cost, sliding fee scale based on income and number of dependents. Therapy is provided in a warm, safe, supportive environment by experienced and caring professionals.
History of MCS
MCS began operation in 1995 under the name of Metropolitan Psychotherapy Community Clinic (MPCC). It was a grassroots project of Metropolitan Psychotherapy Associates (MPA), a multi-disciplinary group of psychotherapists in private practice. These therapists realized that people without mental health insurance and with limited financial means often could not get the quality mental health care they offered, especially if they needed long-term help. With that concern in mind, they began offering supervision and training to post-masters therapists, who in turn provided affordable psychotherapy to adults in need.
The center’s first psychotherapy resident conducted the initial intake session in October 1995. At the outset, the day-to-day operations of the center were performed solely through the pro bono energies of MPA partners and supportive colleagues. In the year 2000, the center achieved tax-exempt status retroactive to its inception and convened its first board of directors. With grant funding secured in 2001, the center was able to hire its first paid administrative staff member.
In February 2002 the center changed its name to become Metropolitan Counseling Services (MCS). In May 2002, the center moved its offices along with MPA to its present location at 1900 Century Place in Northeast Atlanta. Today, the center has 7 resident therapists providing over 3000 psychotherapy sessions a year to adults throughout the metro Atlanta area.
